ECA English Communication Arts

日 英Goals

The goal of Seigakuin University’s English Communication Arts (ECA) program is to provide quality education tailored to the level and needs of students. The courses offered are designed for students who want to learn English for communication, business, studying abroad, or traveling. Most of the courses are multi-skill, which means reading, writing, listening, and speaking are taught and enforced as integrated skills and not in isolation. The ECA is goal-oriented and through a sound and fundamental program we have shown proven results that indicate our students make good progress while becoming more positive and comfortable communicating in English.

1 At Seigakuin University, each department’s English requirement is different. However, all in-coming freshmen have to take between 4 and 8 credits in their first year, and most departments have additional required English courses that must be taken before graduation.
2 All the in-coming freshmen take an English placement test and are placed in levels according to their ability. There are 3-4 levels.
3 A different syllabus and set of goals are designed for each level.
4 At the end of each academic year, students’ progress is measured through norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests. Many students show considerable progress.
5 Most of the classes are small and usually limited to no more than 25-30 students. This allows more interaction between the teacher and students. The teacher can also pay more attention to the needs of each learner.
6 Most of the teachers are full-time and are accessible to students when needed.
7 Full-time English teachers meet every week to discuss and evaluate various aspects of the English program.
8 Through student questionnaires and teachers’ feedback, the ECA courses and their goals are continuously evaluated and revised where necessary.
9 Our teachers are highly qualified and actively participate in conferences and seminars in Japan and abroad.
10 The ECA promotes a student-friendly approach in the classroom. Teachers sincerely care about the well-being of their students and assist them with their personal and educational needs when necessary.

After finishing the first-year requirement, English courses are divided into tracks, or focus areas, so that students who wish to learn English for communication, improve their TOEIC or TOEFL scores, study abroad, or travel overseas can take several courses in that area. This gives all students at Seigakuin University a variety of courses to choose from to finish their English requirement, and it also allows them to choose from a number of elective courses in an area, or areas, they are interested in. In this way, students have a chance to improve their English ability to the point where they can begin to use English effectively in the real world after graduation.
